Nueva exposición de Martin Whittfooth

Martin Whittfooth, uno de los pintores jóvenes (bueno, tiene 31 años) con más relevancia últimamente, tiene nueva exposición en California. En concreto en la galería Corey Holver de Culver City.
Martin realiza cuadros con un fuerte componente surrealista, basados en alegorías de la situación política y económica del momento. Cada animal que pinta tiene un significado que describe el autor, y sobre el que giran un montón de elementos metafóricos. Por ejemplo, el toro sobre la viga es el mercado de Wall Street alrededor del cual distintos pájaros reflejan el movimiento "Occupy Wall Street", significando que este movimiento hace mucho ruido sin conseguir nada, mientras el sistema de inversión se mantiene al borde del precipicio (la viga).

Francamente, me importan muy poco las explicaciones (probablemente me estoy volviendo cada vez más indiferente ante el tema como el bueno de Armand, uno de mis paisajistas favoritos), pero cada cuadro me dice algo pictóricamente y eso es lo que me interesa.

Martin Whittfooth, one of the young painters (well, in fact he is 31) more relevant lately, has a new exhibition at California. At the Corey Holver gallery in Culver City.
Martin paints surrealistic-like paintings, based in the actual political and economical situation. Each animal he paints has a clear meaning that the author depicts, about which a lot of metaphoric elements spin. For example, the bull on the beam means Wall Street market, around which different birds reflect the "Occupy Wall Street" movement, meaning that this movement makes a lot of noise achieving nothing, while the investment system keeps at the edge of a ridge (the girdle).
Frankly, I don't care too much about the meaning of pictures (probably I am becoming each day more indifferent to the subject in a painting; as it is happening to Armand, one of my favourite landscapists), but every painting tells me something pictorically speaking, and that's what I search.

Hace tiempo que quería hacer la entrada y se me iba quedando atrasada, porque tengo la sensación de que con él ha pasado a mejor vida toda una forma de ver la ilustración. En tres años tres grandes maestros de la ilustración y el cómic se han ido: Moebius, Jeffrey C. Jones, y ahora el 21 de agosto Toppi. Y Pratt hace algún tiempo. Francamente, no veo a nadie ahora mismo sentado en el trono que dejan estos cuatro monstruos vacío.

A Toppi ya le dediqué alguna entrada en mi anterior blog, pues ha sido una gran influencia para mí. No en cuanto al estilo, inimitable y que requiere una paciencia de la que carezco, sino en cómo consiguió encajar un montón de distintas tendencias en el mundo que a él le gustaba: la ilustración. Cada uno de sus dibujos puede tener elementos expresionistas, abstractos, hiperrealistas, surrealistas, y cualquier cosa que se nos ocurra. Si le unimos que era un gran amante de la historia, afición que comparto, lo tiene todo para que me cayera bien. Una gran pérdida.

Some time ago I wanted to post about this and it was getting back in schedule, because I've got the feeling that with him, a whole way of treating illustration has passed away. In just three years three masters of comic and illustration have died: Moebius, Jeffrey C. Jones, and 21st August Toppi. And Pratt some time ago. Frankly, I see nobody able to sit in the throne these four monsters leave vacant.

I dedicated some entries to Toppi in my previous blog, because he has been a huge influence to me. Not about style, unique and really patience requiring (which I lack of), but how he could mix a lot of different tendencies in the world he loved: illustration. Each of his drawings can contain expresionist, abstract, hiperrealist, surrealist elements and any other one we think of. If we add that he was a lover of history as myself, he's got everything to make me like him. A big loss.
